Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) – New hope for infertility.

Pre implantation genetic diagnosis is a fantastic chance to avoid genetic diseases in new-born babies. Morning 24/4, Centre  of Embryology Training and Research Technology as well as Department of Biology and Genetics ( Vietnam Military Medical University ),together held a conference about Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). This meeting is aimed to exchange experience and scientific informations on infertility and genetic diseases diagnosis on in-vitro fetilized embryos with a view to enhancing medication.

Presenting about PGD at the conference

A  lot of important people attend to this meeting, including members of the Paliarment, Director Board of VMMU, dean of KCIO Program ( A national Program of Science and Technology in term from 2011 to 2015), delegates from other hospital together with VMMU teachers.

PDG can detect abnormal chromosome and genetic formation.

IVF plays an important role in ART field so this method is used all over the world. To proceed a vertified IVF case, every gene should be qualified before being fertilized. For now, most of IVF centers selected embryos based on their shapes to show some limitation. In some cases, well-qualified embryos shape can’t neither nest nor create healthy offsprings and vice versa.

In the conference, the scientists have stated that:”PGD is the process of screening female embryos to avoid X-linked disease to have increased chances of successful pregnancy will healthy offspring. Only qualified embryos can be implanted to woman’s ovary for it won’t cause any bad effects.” This technique gives a detailed selection. Instead of choosing embryos accorded to their shapes, this technique examines the DNA of the cells. The cells are then evaluated to determine if the inheritance of a problematic gene is present in each embryos. Thanks to PGD, there is an upper chance of sucessful pregnancy.

For example, abnormal embryos have 13, 18,21,x,x chromosome are signs of genetic diseases, such as: Small head, down syndrome,…

Besides, doctors can also detect some abnormal chromosomes like 15,16,22 can make miscarrage thanks to PGD. And it also helps finding the causes of failing IVF cases to avoid abnormal genetics.

The scientists once again phrased: Applying PGD  before IVF is very important and necessary for your decendants.

New hope for risky new-born genetic diseases:

According to doctor Nguyen Dinh Tao, the vice president of Centre of Embrylogy Technology Training and Research University, along with his assistants, most of health centre nowadays put PGD into application when the embryos have developed for 3 months, so it can be dangerous for the woman if she decides to have an abortion. So, PGD is only applied for families that have genetic diseases before. Moreover, there are plenty of genetic diseases have just been discovered, therefore the PGD Technique will be in use in the long run.

PGD has advantages over prenatal diagnostic testing  is that this technique is specified to parents who had chromosomal rearrangment and helps eliminating the chance of termination.

Besides, parents also come in for this technique to make use of blood from the end of the umbilical cord to cure their first child’s genetic disease.

PGD is used to diagnosis some abnormal chromosomes and chromosome-related diseases such as Down syndrome,Patau syndrome,Thalassaemia,…

PGD technique is now used widely in genetics field all over the world with high percision and simplified procession. The combination of PGD and ART technique will be a dramatical breakthrough in Vietnamese health industry.

One among few of medical centres can apply preimplantation genetic screening before implating.

Generally, doctor Hoang Van Luong, the vice president of Centre  of Embryology Training and Research Technology (Vietnam Military Medical University)  has also performed his first application of PGD technique recently. In the past time, being supported by KC10 program, the Ministry of Science and Technologytogether with VMMU were working with the project “ The Process of Diagnosing Genetic Diseases Before Implating to Preimplantation Genetic Screening.” They’re doing this project on Thalassaemie patients and hope to bring out a good result to these patients’ child. In 5 year’s time, this technique will be applied all over the country and can screen different genetic diseases ,bringing hapiness to parents and their children.

Overall , Doctor Hoang Van Luong said: Used to be a medical subject for 47 years, but now ,Centre of Embryos Tecnology-Embryology  has had a huge development in training ,researching specialty Embryology information and infertility therapy. In the past ten years, Embryology center has also become the third center of the country and the first of Military that sucessfully performed IVF technique. The first child  born with IVF technique in Vietnam Military Medical University was on 15-02-2002. From there since, there have been nearly 3000 children were born with ART technique, and  1500 of them were born using IVF technique.

Today, Centre  of Embryology Training and Research Technology has throughoutly researched in IVF , and this will be such a happy news for military families and people all over the country. Nowadays, there still are many genetics diseases affecting our descendants lineage such as Thalassmemia, spinal muscular atrophy,… One of the causes that lead to embry tranfer failure is that the embryos implanted in the ovary carry genetic abnormalities. In the past, Centre  of Embryology Training and Research Technology and Centre of  Military Biomedical Research had successfully carried out Diagnosis and Genetic Screening Technique on embryos before implanting on women. This is an outstanding achievement in science, comparable with international levels and it will increase the chance of fertility in IVF cases. In Vietnam, AF Hanoi is one of the few medical centers that can successfully perform Pre-implantation Genetic Screening Technique.

Doctor, Professor and Head Manager of Embryology Training and Research Technology center claims that: “Every single scientific research constructions along with diagnosis, consulting and treating works on infertility of the hospital has been on the go to devote to the popularity quality and bring about happiness not only to military families but also people of the country”.
